Since I use a Mac at home and host this site at work using IIS, I’ve been looking for a way to make blogging a little easier. Little did I realize what I was getting into. Turns out that I had to learn a wee bit about PHP and getting my server configured the right way to get it all to work. Then I needed a crash course in MySQL to get the database end of things running. And finally, I had to figure out how to integrate blogging tools into the template for this site.
And so on, and so on, and so on…
However, after many headaches and a serious case of LCD Bug-Eye Syndrome, I’m happy to report that it’s finally up and working! Courtesy of WordPress, I now have a real live blog instead of a plain ol’ HTML start page. Most of the changes are in the background, but there are a couple of cool new features on the front end to keep you busy. For starters, you can now leave commentary on each post. I’ve also got a live bookmark feed for those of you with RSS-capable browsers.
I’ve tested the site on Safari, Firefox and Internet Explorer (yes it’s evil, but it still has 90% of the market–so what can you do?), and everything seems to work fine. I’m still trying to get user registration and integration with my mail server figured out, but those should be available soon.
With any luck, I’ll also have the site toasting bagels and home-brewing beer in the near future–so stay tuned!
