Once More, Unto the Breach

Posted by:

Things have been moving right along over the course of the last week. First off, Bantam sent me a couple of advance reading copies of PRODIGAL–a nice treat in and of itself. No matter how much time you spend writing and editing a book, there’s just something special about seeing an actual bound edition for the first time. I also (finally) finished off a detailed outline for my next proposed book and dashed it off to my agent, who absolutely loved the storyline. This came as a great relief, as my agent is nothing if not honest and a total realist when it comes to the marketplace. The outline is now in the hands of my editor, who will–if all goes according to plan, of course–think it’s the greatest thing since bottled beer and give me the green light to get started.

I also touched base with Ian Levy, that grandest of producers who was kind enough to option HAMMERJACK for film development. To those of you who read this site, it’s probably no secret that I also harbor some screenwriting ambitions–so you can imagine how freakishly amazed I was when he offered to take a look at some of my stuff. So I’m dusting off one of my old spec scripts, in the hopes that he might like it enough to send a few contract assignments my way–rewrites, polishes, that sort of thing. Of course, I’ll need to do a little rewriting of my own before I dare let human eyes behold it once more. Things change over the course of years–and what I thought was brilliant back in the day might not pass muster in the here and now.

Wish me luck, kiddies!

Good luck with those screenwriting ambitions, and glad to hear you got some ARCs in…I’m really looking forward to getting a copy of PRODIGAL in my hands. September can’t get here soon enough.

With the way time is passing for me these days, September will be here before you know it! I’m not sure of what exactly to expect out of this audition–Hollywood, after all, is a cruel place–but Ian is a great guy, and I feel pretty damn lucky that he’s willing to read one of my scripts.

Well, like the old AC/DC song says: “If you wanna be a star of stage and screen, look out–it’s rough and mean.”

Excellent, I’ll have to try to remember all of those treatments that you showed us 15+ years ago.

    Hey Mark!

It`s been while. I did get the books I`d sent down to you back just around Thankgiving. Thank you very much!

And no, I didn’t drop off the face of the Earth…My laptop`s hard drive blew a little while back and I’ve been taken up with so many things since, I still haven’t taken it in to have it replaced. You`d think otherwise coming from a guy who takes care of infrastructure support for others, but you know what they say…

I`m sitting in front of the PC writing this just now, although it`s tucked away in the basement which really doesn`t appeal that much to me. Once you had a taste of wi-fi, it`s tough to go back…And with all the time I spend pounding away at my keyboard during the day at work, it usually takes a lot to get me down here once dinner’s up.

Anyway, I`m glad to hear Prodigal is on schedule and you’ve received the ARCs. I guess I’ll have to get some more beer down to you ;-O

And I don`t want to jinx it, but I can’t wait for you to post that Hammerjack will “Coming Soon to a Theatre Near You”. That will be a great day!

It also looks like you’ll have plenty more writing to keep you busy for the next while (not that you seem to mind in the least). Just make sure you keep setting some time aside for Lexie, the Disney Channel, and your wife (in no particular order).

I’ll definitely have to come by more of then. 7-8 months of blogs to read through is an awful lot for one sitting.

    Ciao! Alain

BTW…The cover art for Progigal looks great! I had a look a a larger image of it on Stepen Youll’s site. Might be good idea to get the smaller cover image in your site link to it and load in a separate window…when you have a chance. The detailling is really nice!

Hey, Alain! Good to hear from you again. I was wondering what happened after I sent the books back to you last year. Glad you got them safe and sound.

And thanks for the kind words. It’s been pretty exciting seeing book #2 heading toward publication. Still no news on how the movie deal is proceeding–but I guess that’s why they option for a whole year, to give ’em time to get things rolling. The hard part, as always, is waiting…

Hey, we did start getting a few more Unibroues down here. Don de Dieu is on the shelf at my favorite beer store, though I still can’t get Raftman . My wife and I are already looking forward to Christmas so we can grab a few of the holiday brews. I’ll need to stock up on the Scaldis Noel this year–man, that stuff was hard to get last time around!

Sorry to hear about your hard drive. But if you’re in the market for a new notebook, might I suggest one of the new MacBooks? You know you can run Windows XP on it if ya like!
