You’re Busted

I’ve never been a big fan of modern memoirs. These days, it seems that most of what populates the nonfiction bestseller lists veers toward the treacly or the titillating–pop-culture confessionals that celebrate victimhood as virtue or parade the worst kind of bad taste. Honestly, why would anyone plunk down their hard-earned cash to delve into Paris Hilton’s sex life? Well, obviously there’s a market for it, otherwise publishers wouldn’t be offering handsome advances for these tell-all books.

Eye Candy

Looks like Stephen Youll, sci-fi artist extraordinaire, has been working overtime. So without further ado, please allow me to present his cover art for PRODIGAL!

I’m definitely sensing an Underworld vibe here…

Personally, I love it. The color scheme really grabs your attention, especially those deep red hues on the city skyline. So does the slinky babe–which, based on her attire and appearance, can only be Avalon. Bad guys (and girls, ...

Mass Market Appeal

Posted by:

It’s amazing what you can find out when surfing Amazon’s website. Take Hammerjack, for instance–I had absolutely no idea that Bantam was doing a mass market paperback release until my wife checked the listings there and said, “Hey, hon–what’s this?”

Cover Me

Bantam recently sent over the proposed cover copy for PRODIGAL. Believe it or not, they have professional blub writers who do this sort of thing full time–a precarious job, if there ever was one. Imagine having to please editors, publishers AND egotistical authors at the same time. So here’s to you, Mr. Blurb Writer! We hope they make a beer commercial about you someday.

Drum roll please…

And We’re Off…

To New York, that is! I just finished the final polish on PRODIGAL today and sent it off to Bantam. As I mentioned in my previous post, there was quite a bit of cutting involved–almost a hundred pages, if you toss in the two previous drafts. Hell, if I’d been that economical from the start, I would’ve finished the dang thing a lot sooner!

So now the manuscript weighs in at a (still) hefty 507 pages. That’s ...

Chop Chop

After a couple of solid weeks of work, I’m almost finished with the first editorial pass at PRODIGAL. Only have one more chapter and a short epilogue to go–which ain’t too shabby, considering that this is the holiday season. Not to worry, though. I stayed off the beer while I was slicing and dicing. I still have no idea how guys like Hemingway and Wilde (and Stephen King, for that matter) wrote while they were on ...
